Calis Beach Fethiye Turkey Holidays
Calis (pronounced chalish) has been a popular seaside resort for many years. Though the beach is shingle there is always a breeze so even the hottest days are pleasant and it is so long that overcrowding is not possible. A long pedestrianised promenade runs the length of the beach, perfect for a daytime and evening strolls.
The beach is also home to several varieties of sea turtle which make their nests in the sand. A protection plan is in place, for these rare creatures, to ensure their survival.
Calis is essentially a purpose built resort as Fethiye town does not have its own beaches and with the advent of tourism to this region, Calis filled the shortfall demanded by visitors who liked the area. Before it was a holiday destination Calis was principally a place where mined minerals were loaded onto ships for transport.
A small railway ran along the beachside to the spur at the end that faces Fethiye where the boats were loaded from the jetty. The main element was chromium dug out from mines just outside Calis. Whilst Calis itself may be lacking in history there are many fascinating places locally to see and the resort makes a great base from which to get out and explore all there is to see.
With the increase in numbers of both domestic and foreign tourists wanting a more traditional seaside holiday than Fethiye town could offer, Calis developed quickly and has had a few facelifts over the years. Most of the updating has taken place on the promenade and the canal waterways that meander through from the sea.
Currently work continues on a walkway that will run alongside the sea, linking up Calis to Fethiye. There are plans for the walkway to be dotted with a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars. Infrastructure is always being improved in the resort to cope with the rise in traffic during the summer seasons.
Because of its climate and location Calis has become a popular place for British people to emigrate to so there is a substantial foreign community based here. This tends to ensure improvements to the resort are implemented to the benefit of everyone.
If you are hankering for a last minute holiday then look no further, Calis beach has everything you may need for a great summer sun holiday in Turkey with a relaxed, laid back atmosphere, an uncrowded beach and plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.
Things to Do in Calis Beach

Aside from Calis itself there are other towns to visit nearby. Fethiye is just across the bay and has a very Turkish feel to it. Eating out in Calis
As a relatively small resort Calis has a disproportionate amount of places to eat. Restaurants are open from breakfast until late at night; whenever you’re hungry you are sure to find somewhere open. From light snacks to 3 course meals, whatever you fancy you can find it.
The large choice of establishments means that there are restaurants that serve fast food, Indian, Chinese, European and Turkish dishes. Most restaurants serve more than one cuisine at the same time, which is ideal if one member of the party is not keen on a certain meal type. All cafes and restaurants offer kids menus also so all members of the family are catered for.
If you fancy venturing away from Calis on an evening the neighboring town of Fethiye has lots of authentic Turkish restaurants and is well worth a visit for the food alone.
Not as “in your face†lively as some other resorts Calis still has enough bars and watering holes for its visitors to enjoy. The promenade area of Calis is vibrant with restaurants and bars each competing with one another to attract clientele. There are a couple of dancing bars and bars offering live music but quieter places to drink are easy to find too. Generally nightlife is more laid back here but you may well find special nights for example karaoke, fancy dress and quizzes going on whilst you are on holiday.
Some bars show sports events. If an important football match is on there will be a choice of places to watch. Football is big in Turkey so international matches especially those featuring England or Turkey are always big draws.
If you head to Fethiye on an evening there are lots of bars and a couple of clubs which offer alternatives to a night out in Calis. If you fancy a good party night out then Oludeniz and Hisaronu are both very lively resorts with a huge assortment of night time venues.
The short ride to the nearby pretty harbour town of Fethiye can be done by either a bus or by water taxi from Calis which takes approx 20 minutes and is a very enjoyable way to make the journey. Buses to other resorts like Hisaronu and Oludeniz can be found in Fethiye centre for those wanting to sample a different atmosphere.
